Spring Cleaning: Making Room for What God Wants to Add

As we prepare to transition from winter into spring – typically between late February and mid-April – with March being the most popular time, we naturally feel the urge to clean, declutter, and refresh our spaces. We open windows, let fresh air in, and begin clearing out what no longer serves us.

But what if this wasn’t just a physical practice? What if spring cleaning is also a spiritual invitation?

An invitation to clear out, realign, and make room for what God wants to do next in our lives. Just as our homes accumulate dust, clutter, and things we’ve outgrown, so do our lives – spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.

We pick up:

  • Old habits
  • Unhealed wounds
  • Limiting beliefs
  • Distractions
  • Misaligned priorities

And before we know it, we’re full but not fruitful. Spring cleaning reminds us that what we don’t intentionally remove will eventually restrict what we can receive.

“Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us…” — Hebrews 12:1

God is not just interested in adding to us, He is committed to preparing us for what He wants to add.

Enlargement: Making Room for More

There is a powerful principle in Scripture about enlargement. God’s desire to increase, expand, and grow us. But enlargement requires preparation.

“Enlarge the place of your tent, and let them stretch out the curtains of your dwellings; do not spare; lengthen your cords, and strengthen your stakes.” — Isaiah 54:2

Before the increase comes, there must be stretching, strengthening, repositioning and intentional preparation. You cannot pour new into a space that is already cluttered with old. You cannot receive more if you are not stewarding what you already have.

We often pray for more; more opportunities, more finances, more influence, more responsibility, but God looks at how we are managing what’s already in our hands.

“Whoever is faithful in little is faithful also in much…” — Luke 16:10

Enlargement is not random, it is released through stewardship, discipline, and obedience. Before God expands your territory, He asks:

  • Can you manage what I’ve already given you?
  • Are you disciplined with your time?
  • Are you obedient in the small things?
  • Have you made room for more?

Take this conversation with God a step further by taking a moment to ask God “What do I need to release this season?”

It may be:

  • A mindset that limits your faith
  • A habit that drains your discipline
  • A relationship that disrupts your peace
  • A distraction that steals your focus
  • Fear that keeps you from obedience

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” — Psalm 51:10

Spiritual cleaning starts internally – heart, mind, and spirit.

So we’ve talked about the deep cleaning but what does this look like spiritually & physically… hmm…

Spiritually this looks like…

  • Consecrating your time with God – Set aside intentional time for prayer, worship, and the Word.
  • Fasting and praying for clarity – Remove distractions so you can hear God clearly.
  • Evaluating your spiritual habits: Are you consistent, or just occasional?
  • Renewing your mind with Scripture: Replace lies with truth daily.
  • Speaking life intentionally: Align your words with God’s promises.

Physically…

  • Declutter your environment: Remove items that no longer serve your life or purpose.
  • Organize your space: A clear space often leads to a clearer mind.
  • Create systems and structure: Discipline in your environment supports discipline in your life.
  • Audit your time: Remove activities that don’t align with your purpose.
  • Simplify your commitments: Not everything good is God. Learn to say no!

Spring is not just about cleaning, it’s about preparing for growth. God desires to enlarge you:

  • In capacity
  • In influence
  • In discipline
  • In impact
  • In spiritual depth

But enlargement requires ROOM! Room in your schedule. Room in your heart. Room in your mindset. Room in your obedience.

Sometimes the hardest part of “spring cleaning” isn’t the cleaning, it’s the letting go. We hold on to things because they’re familiar. We hold on because we’ve invested time. We hold on because we’re afraid of what comes next.

But what if what you’re holding onto is the very thing blocking your next level?

“Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing…” — Isaiah 43:18–19

God cannot fully release the new if we are still clinging tightly to the old. There are seasons where obedience looks like release, not retention. Let it go, not because it didn’t matter, but because God has more.

This season, don’t just clean your home, clean your life. Release what is heavy. Remove what is unnecessary. Realign what is out of order. And prepare for what God is about to do. Because when you steward well, when you walk in discipline, and when you obey God fully, increase becomes inevitable. So open the windows. Clear the space. Make room.

God is ready to add, expand, and enlarge, but He’s looking for a life that is ready to receive it.

Here’s a simple prayer as you go into a time of spring cleaning for your next season…

Heavenly Father,
I thank You for this season of renewal, refreshing and realignment.

Search my heart and reveal anything that does not align with Your will.
Give me the strength to release what You are calling me to let go of,

whether it be habits, mindsets, relationships, distractions or even physical items I need to release.

Create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me.
Help me to steward well everything You have already placed in my hands

with discipline, wisdom, and obedience.

Enlarge my capacity, stretch me where needed, and prepare me for what You are about to do.
Let my life be fertile ground for Your increase.

I surrender my plans, my timing, and my will to You.
Make room in me for more of You and all that You desire to add.

In Jesus’ name, Amen!
